J Nicolaus Kirst

Author | Romanticism & Horror

While in college, J Nicolaus Kirst co-authored his first book with his best friend and then went on to write an additional 11 novels and 27 collections of poetry under various pennames. His works have sold millions to date, but after his breakout success, kirst stepped away from his career to focus on his private life.

After almost 15 years, Kirst has returned to publishing with a mission in mind: bring back classic Literary writing. Devoted to moving away from technological dependency, Kirst is dedicated to the use of old-fashioned pen and paper, and his personal 1972 original typewriter, spending long hours by the Hudson River in his home in upstate New York.

His writing, critically acclaimed as “hauntingly enchanting” and “masterfully engaging and thought-provoking”, creates beauty from the macabre and grotesque while exploring deep psychological themes. Harolding in a new styling that blends themes of Ralph Waldo Emerson, Mary Shelly, and Fyodor Dostoevsky, Kirst sets out to change the modern zeitgeist from pop culture fiction to a renaissance of masterful artistic achievement.

J Nicolas Kirst, born in the bread basket of the midwest, graduated from college and married his long-time sweetheart Annette O’connor. After moving to New York, his first job was in a publishing factory binding books. While he expected to make his way into the arena of best-selling authors at a young age, his short-lived career came to a stop at the birth of his first child when Annette faced complications and struggled to recover. Writing turned back into a hobby as he shifted his attention inward and on his family as they grew. As the use of digital platforms, made-easy self-publishing, and the rise of AI invaded every corner of the literary world, Kirst grew restless and Annette urged him, “You are a writer, and it is who you are, and if you’re so tired of this then you should start writing again.” It was then that Kirst pulled out his old typewriter, sat down, and started on his latest works to help carve out the groundwork for a new era of writers and readers.

To date, he has begun collaboration with a handful of new and rising authors, and while he is not keen on the idea of dependency on technology, with the support and assistance of fellow writers, he is re-emerging into publishing through digital media, bringing his old world style to the new world stage to change the experience of reading and literature for all.
